THE GLUMP Epsilon Zeta Alumni Association, Alpha Phi Omega Volume 20, Number 1, June 1999 Editor's Corner There's a lot of material in this issue so I'll be brief, but there are a couple things I need to cover. If you were prompt in mailing your dues you no doubt noticed your check took a long time to clear. The details are in the minutes, but basically we needed a tax ID before I could open a new checking account. Getting one took longer than anyone would have expected. Also, this is obviously not February. At our annual meeting last October we discovered we had scheduled it the same weekend as the Sectional, which meant most of the actives weren't around and service opportunities were limited. To prevent that type of problem in the future we delayed scheduling the next annual meeting until the ECOMM meeting in March. That meant delaying the Glump so we could give everyone advance notice of the annual meeting, although we did plan to have it out earlier than this. I was asked about a lifetime member category for the EZAA. At the present time there isn't one. We could consider one, but I'm not sure how we would price it. The latest on our efforts to recover our missing funds is in the President's Report. There is also a proposed amendment to our Bylaws and the latest on the 50th Anniversary gift to RPI in his report. We are planning to publish the Alumni Directory in August so if you've moved since the last time we heard from you or the 1997 Directory, whichever is later, please get an updated address in to us as quickly as possible. Also, we have been relying on RPI for address labels. Unfortunately, RPI will no longer print labels for us and they weren't very forthcoming with a file either. We were about to try to build the file from the 1997 Directory and whatever else we had when they finally gave us one. The upshot is that we are now maintaining our own mailing list, so in the future if you move the only way we will know your new address is if you send it to us directly. Our next annual meeting is scheduled for October 2-3, 1999 at Rensselaer. If you are even thinking about attending please let me know. That way I can be sure you have the latest information. Yf, Bill President's Report I finally have good news to spread in my report. The first item is that the Chapter was awarded its third (another first, I believe) Arno "Shorty" Nowotny Service Award for their 1996-98 service program at the 1998 National Convention. The second bit of good news is that the EZAA is now being reimbursed for the monies taken from it in 1993. Although I did file a complaint with the Small Claims Court in Nassau County (with much assistance by Andy Braverman-thanks again Andy), we did not have to appear in Court since our former officer contacted me directly and offered to pay the money back in four installments. We have received the first three installments to date. So the unfortunate episode in EZAA history is almost at a close. [Ed: We now have all four.] I attended the Chapter's Advisors Meeting to obtain information that might be of interested to us alumni. Other than the Nowotny award, I found out that the Chapter will be relocated out of their office in the Student Union and moved to West Hall for one to two years while the Union is renovated (we're not the only ones. Most of the Union is being relocated except Mother's). The move occurs immediately following the end of the Spring 99 Semester (real soon). Mail will still be delivered to the Chapter in West Hall with the "235 Student Union" address. This moves the Chapter from the center of campus to the downhill edge of campus. Obviously, Rush was a big topic of the Advisors Meeting. Much work was performed on transferring the old treasury to its new location. I won't steal the meat of Bill's report, but would like to thank Bill and Andy Moroney for their work and patience during the transition of the EZAA account from Massachusetts to New York. Based on the information Bill has obtained we should have some sort of "dissolution clause" in our Bylaws in the (unlikely) event that the EZAA ceases to exist. This is related to our standing as a tax-exempt organization [Ed: see the ECOMM meeting minutes for the discussion of this item]. Therefore, I am submitting a Bylaws amendment in this issue of the Glump for review, comment and a vote at the next Association Meeting. Feel free to contact me by phone (518-371-7241) or e-mail (rrommel@wizvax.net) with comments on the amendment. Barring massive outcry from Glump readers everywhere, the EZAA ECOMM decided the next Association Meeting will take place on October 3, 1999 at 10:00 A.M. at RPI. Write it in your calendars please. Lastly, for those who have not yet heard, the Gift to RPI for our 50th Anniversary is once again at square one. Paul Sicard has put a ton of work into arranging an appropriate gift, and deserves thanks from us all (especially me. Thanks again, Paul!). It's just that the plans seem to fall through at RPI's end each time (we are currently working on gift #3). Any assistance or ideas please contact Brother Sicard or me (and I will forward them to him). [Ed: the ECOMM meeting minutes contain some ground rules for the gift.] Yf, Rob In case you were wondering (and have e-mail): How to reach Epsilon Zeta Chapter in the Electronic Age! If the Association has not been reformed after a period of five years, the funds shall be made available to the Active Chapter. In the event that the Active Chapter cannot safeguard the funds for any reason, remaining Association funds shall be transferred to the National Office for equivalent safekeeping. P.S. I spoke to the National Office. We are "officially" recognized for 1999. Also, we can do Life Memberships for Distinguished Service Key recipients. Vice-president's Report Hello! Well, things are going just swimmingly in the office of Vice-president. I expect to have no problem fulfilling my bylaws-appointed duty of obtaining a meeting room for our business meeting. In fact, I'll go one step further and say that if anyone thinks they need help finding a place to stay, I will help connect you with crash space or local hotels. Heck, the VP needs to do something, right? So if you are in need, I can be reached by phone (518-274-8453) or e-mail (caracp3@rpi.edu). I hope everyone is excited about another visit to the place of our "youth." President Robert Rommel presiding. A quorum was present. President's Report: Rob Rommel I. Pending Small Claims action * Chuck Carletta lost the file so we are using photocopies of the pertinent documents. * Andy Braverman will make the claim because it must be made in the county court for the county in which the defendant lives now. * Rob will go to court when the case comes up. I. Scholarship Fund * Rob has a list of who got how much and when. * Per the chapter the $2800 carryover and $1500 interest reported in the September 1998 Glump is correct. The $4300 total reported is, however, incorrect. That number did not include the principal, which is considerably higher. * From the chapter: The last time they picked someone he had more than he needed so they didn't award a scholarship. * The suggestion was made to set aside sufficient interest to cover inflation. - The account is under the control of the chapter so the suggestion was referred to their representative. * From the chapter: The agreement with RPI may need to be updated because of changes at RPI. I. 50th Anniversary Gift * Two ideas - An information kiosk designed by the School of Architecture - Repairs to the campus map outside the Campus Security Office Vice-president's Report: Cindy Smith Corbett * Some of us got together informally at Holmes and Watson. * The chapter had projects but no brothers because they were at Sectional. Treasurer's Report: Bill Springer * As of October 16, 1998: Starting Balance (1/1/98): $1,048.81 Income Dues $45.00 Donations $15.00 Expenses September 1998 Glump Copying (686 copies) $173.38 Postage (678 copies) $216.96 Extra stamps (22) $7.04 Envelopes (1000) $8.54 Mailing Labels TBD (about $19.50) Balance $702.89 minus TBD * Because we do not currently have a checking account (see New Business) the amounts shown under "Expenses" are currently owed to officers. Member at Large and Extension Chair * Nothing to report Old Business * None New Business I. Suggestion: EZAA President be an Ex Officio member of the Chapter Advisor Committee * Referred to the Chapter * If they concur we will need to change our Bylaws. I. RPI is repairing the Approach. * Suggestion: we talk to RPI about getting the Chapter recognition for their work maintaining the Approach over the years (until RPI told them to stop for liability concerns). * Gene Greger volunteered to follow this up. I. Preliminary on the 55th Anniversary Reunion * Cindy would like to keep the cost down while making it enjoyable. Her motto will be "Easy, Cheap and Proud of it." I. Checking Account * The bank with our account was bought out and the new management started charging a monthly fee. * Andy Moroney closed out the account and forwarded the funds to Bill. * When Bill went to open a new account the subject of a tax ID number came up. Bill didn't know what ours was so he couldn't open an account. * At this point we don't know if we ever had a number. If we did, none of the officers know about it. * There was much discussion about options such as using National's or the Chapter's ID number if we don't have one, but at this point some research needs to be done to determine our course of action. Elections I. President * The only nominee being Rob Rommel he was elected by acclimation. * Steve Joy indicated an interest in being nominated next year. I. Vice-president * The only nominee being Peter Caracappa he was elected by acclimation. * I. Secretary-Treasurer * The only nominee being Bill Springer he was elected by acclimation. * Bernard Derboven indicated an interest in being nominated next year. I. Extension Chair * The only nominee being Gene Greger he was elected by acclimation. I. Member at Large * Bernard Derboven, Rich Vehlow and Sharon Zohar were nominated. * Bernard Derboven was elected on the first vote. Meeting Dates I. ECOMM Meeting * Date: March 21, 1999 I. Association Annual Meeting * This meeting ended up being scheduled at the same time as Sectionals, which caused problems. * If we schedule the annual meeting at this time we risk a similar problem (other events aren't scheduled yet). * The suggestion was made to schedule it on Alumni Weekend. * We decided to wait until the ECOMM meeting to schedule the annual meeting. Minutes of ECOMM Meeting Date: March 21, 1999 Starting time: 11:23 A.M. President Robert Rommel presiding. President's Report: Rob Rommel I. Official National recognition * Last year we paid our dues for both 1998 and 1999. National billed us for this year anyway. * Rob will follow up with National. I. 50th Anniversary Gift to RPI * There is approximately ten thousand dollars in the gift. * The plan was to build an information kiosk on campus. Unfortunately the School of Architecture didn't come up with workable plans. * Paul Sicard is asking for ideas. Contact him at psicard@entergy.com * Here are the ground rules: - It should be a concrete/tangible item. - There should be a place for a plaque giving us credit for it. - It should be low maintenance. - It should be something that will last a long time. I. Old item: Paying for Life Memberships for Distinguished Service Key recipients * The cost is $50 for undergraduates and those within one year of graduation or $75 otherwise. * The maximum is $375 to catch up with those we should have done since deciding to do this. * The motion was made, seconded and carried to expend up to $375 for Life Memberships for recent past Distinguished Service Key recipients. * We will continue to provide Life Memberships for Distinguished Service Key recipients as policy in the future. * Rob will check with National concerning how to do this. I. Scholarship Fund * No new information as of this date I. Missing Funds * Our former officer contacted Rob directly with an offer to repay the funds in four installments. * The first installment accompanied the offer and he has honored the schedule to date. * It appears this matter will soon be behind us. I. Next meeting * The National Alumni Office is suggesting more involvement in service projects than simply providing people for Chapter projects. They are encouraging us to plan our own projects as well. * If the Chapter doesn't have a project, we will do one. * The Sectional date will be set in about three weeks. We will pick a tentative date for our meeting and move it if necessary to avoid a conflict. * Tentative date: October 2-3, 1999. Alternate date: October 16-17, 1999. Vice-President's Report: Peter Caracappa I. Alumni news: An alumnus of the chapter (joined in 1948) is participating in the rechartering of the chapter at SUNY Binghamton as a scouting advisor. Secretary/Treasurer's Report: Bill Springer I. (See the consolidated report in this Glump for the financial report) II. Tax ID * National decided in 1992 not to cover alumni associations under their tax ID. * The chapter does not have a separate tax ID. They are covered by National's tax ID. - Therefore, we can not use the chapter's ID. We need our own. * Bill met with an accountant to prepare the necessary paperwork and we now have a tax ID. * Per the accountant we do meet the requirements to be tax exempt. I. Dissolution clause * For our receipts to be tax-exempt they must be forever used for a tax-exempt purpose, even if the Association is dissolved. We can ensure this either with an explicit dissolution clause or simply depend on state law. * The latter is like dying without a will-probably not the best idea unless one has nothing. * Bill recommended that now that we actually have some funds beyond our immediate needs a clause would be appropriate. * Rob will check with our Regional Representative and put a proposed clause in the next Glump. I. Checking Account * We now have a checking account and all dues/donations have been deposited. Those officers who have been funding association activities will soon be reimbursed. * We received a clock radio as a gift for opening the account. - Bill proposed donating it to the Chapter, but they already have one. - We will raffle the clock at the October meeting and the receipts will be deposited in the treasury. I. Because we delayed scheduling the annual meeting until now, we delayed the Glump until the date was set and could be publicized. News and Notes Karen L. Baouche '78: Although almost no one knows this yet due to my being so busy, my husband Hocine and I had a beautiful baby boy on March 23, 1997. His name is Jeremy Karim. I am still working at SCIREX Corporation doing research for pharmaceutical companies and my husband has started a company called Airspace, Inc. dealing in airline parts. "Hi" to all of those I haven't heard from in a while. E-mail me and I promise I'll write back. E-mail: baouchek@scirex.com (also hocine@tiac.net) Michael "Demon" Beyer '89: It has been an interesting few years... After two years as Section 92 Chairman I stepped down in March 1998. The twenty or more hours of A-Phi-O Chairmanship was really taking over what little life I had. While I loved every minute of it, I decided it was finally time to have some time in my life outside of Alpha Phi Omega. Free time-what a concept! What have I been doing with all that free time you wonder? Alpha Phi Omega, of course. This weekend (12/5/1998) I will be welcoming in the second chapter I've led through the chartering process. I've been working with a group at Goldey-Beacon College (in Delaware) since the first sign of interest in November 1996. By the time you read this, Goldey-Beacom will have become the 700th chapter of Alpha Phi Omega. May Alpha Epsilon Delta Chapter ever stand united! Now as if that wasn't taking up all my time... Hopefully by the time this gets published in the Glump, Philadelphia will have been selected as the site of Alpha Phi Omega's 2000 National Convention! If we get the bid, I plan to take a short vacation. If we don't get the bid, it will be only a slightly longer vacation. Walter E. Bruetsch '58: Got back for 40th Reunion in early June '98. Great seeing many of my old classmates. Still work for Pratt & Whitney-mainly military jet engines. James Calabrese '79: Jim is now a manager in the Technology Department at National Steel. He works exclusively with Ford. Jean is working on her teaching certificate at Eastern Michigan. Greg (11) is in middle school and loves every minute of it. He competes with the local swim team. Mark (10) is playing soccer-goalie. His team won a tournament last summer. In the fall his team finished first in their division. Both boys are A students. John Chiachiaretta '88: I started a new job this past August at Infinium Software in Lexington MA. I flew to Panama in September to be best man for Bryan Lagos. I'm sure there's more, but these are the two most recently notable things. Feel free to send e-mail (though I should apologize ahead of time if I'm not always quick to respond). E-mail: john_chiachiaretta@infinium.com Dave D'Alessio '78: I have just started at U.Conn-Stamford. My new apartment is within walking distance of everything-just like RPI days. Richard Donovan '92: Working for the Vantive Corp as a system consultant since August 97. Travelling around the world for it (Toronto; Dallas; Grenoble, France; Santa Clara, CA). Kathryn (Abbott) Dyer '87: We're still living in St Louis. Daughter Rebecca turned three last June. Husband Rick ('85) still works as an aeronautical engineer at McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing). I've taken a break from insurance defense law to stay home with Becca. I'd like to hear from APO friends. Ralph A. Franco, Jr. '85: Ralph and Laura are in Zweibruecken, Germany where they are enjoying the slow pace and orderliness of life in Europe. Ralph is serving as the CIO of the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Center, Europe in nearby Pirmasens and is running the Central European Healthcare Executives in his spare time. Laura has had enough of the Army and is very happy being a homemaker and deciding what she is going to use here GI Bill benefits on. Leon Langer '49: Still involved in scouting with Troop 5, Massapequa NY, which is over 81 years old. Since I've only been in scouting since 1936, it makes me feel like a youngster. Congratulations on the great stuff you people in Epsilon Zeta ate doing. Keep up the good work. Although I'm not there to help out physically, I'm with you in spirit. Kenneth C. Laprade '82: Maria and I have been working for Harris Corp. in Florida for fifteen years now. Our children, Tyler and Rudy, turned six and three this year. Larry leads the Cub Scouts, works as a quality analyst at UNC hospitals and teaches computer courses at the UNC Business School and School of Public Health. Paul W. Masten '68: It's always good to hear of APhiO's continued success at RPI, and of the friendship it has engendered for so many generations of alumni. I feel connected even though '64-66 at the 'Tute is long ago and far away. As always, hi to Camp, Raz, et al. My newest horizon is as a proud dad of an Eagle Scout now become college freshman. Eric finally got his Eagle just before 18. Spent summer as a scout craft director at Camp Black Mountain, in the far northeast corner of Washington. He's now at Western Washington University in Bellingham. He's been recruited to help with the local Order of the Arrow chapter and is trying to track down "Associated Students of Alpha Phi Omega" to see if they can get a chapter started at WWU. [Ed: We wish them good luck! It's always good to see another chapter started.] I'm busy as always as co-principal owner of an 85-person civil/structural firm, Reid Middleton, Inc., in Evertt, WA. Louise and I both stay very active in scouting-she chaired our council auction this year and plans to do Wood badge next fall. I'm council commissioner of Mt. I am a plant physician at Delphi Harrison Radiator in Lockport NY and working in a group practice in Amherst NY. Life is fun and tricky with children. Andy Moroney '88: Deven was born September 26, 1998. He and big brother Connor, now three years old, are doing well. Between Andy's job and the boys we are doing well to know what day of the week it is. We are both enjoying reading the Glump without publishing it. See you in the funny pages. Robert Philhower '86: New address: 10 Mayfield St, Valley Cottage NY 10989-1801 Mike Phillips '80 [Info courtesy of Paul Sicard]: Has started his own real estate rental investment company in the Wilmington Delaware area and is also doing consulting in the nuclear power industry on probabilistic risk assessment. Beth Robie '81: My husband Steve and I welcomed our first baby-a son named Sean-on June 9, 1998. Despite our late start at this baby business all three of us are holding up pretty well. David Roggenkamp and Colleen Dargie '85,'82: David is now working part-time (60%) at Ford Motor, job sharing with another part-timer, supervising a team of people who are developing a "Product Development Factory" strategy and simulation modeling. Colleen continues as a senior staff anesthesiologist at Henry Ford Hospital. Our recent big excitement was the arrival of Karen Elise Roggenkamp on October 14, 1998. She, along with big sister Susan, keeps us busy. Allan Ruppar '66: Moved to Virginia in 1996 after 20 years in Torrance, CA. Found classmates and APO brothers Stu Haus and Bob Silva here. I am Troop Advancement Chairperson for Troop 41's troop committee and serve on the East Greenbush School District Technology Committee. In addition I serve as one of the trustees at my church. It's good to read the news in the Glump. Keep up the good work. Michael Shannon '91: After a few years in Boston, Nancy and I are now married and living in Madison, WI while I finish a two year stint in grad school (EE). Heather Shenkman '97: I'll be graduating from medical school in May '99. Right now, I'm interviewing for residency in internal medicine. Paul Sicard '79 ('80, '87, '88...) [Ed: I'm not making this up]: Daughter Elizabeth Anne born April 6, 1998 and has yet [as of November 1998] to distinguish day from night very well. The family vacationed around New Bedford, Mass. this summer, visiting relatives. With three young children in a hotel room it was an adventure. The motel rolled out the red carpet for us when we left; making sure it was covered by clear plastic sheets. George F. Spagna, Jr. '73: What's to say? One daughter in college (Kim, first year at UVa). Another graduated and teaching Latin in Fairfax County VA (Amy, Randolph-Macon College '98, Phi Beta Kappa, Magna cum Laude). Sylvia and I will celebrate our 25th anniversary next June 1 [1999]. I chair the Physics Department, am President-elect Virginia Conference AAUP, am currently Associate Professor, but nominated for promotion to Professor and advisor to student group attempting to re-charter the Alpha Phi Omega chapter at Randolph-Macon (Defunct since the mid-50's.) [We wish you good luck George.] Bill Springer '70: Being secretary must be catching. Either that or I'm completely insane. In the last year I've become the secretary for two other organizations I belong to. Sometimes when you're asked the only right answer is "yes." I'm still enjoying being retired (almost six years). I'm actually getting started on a couple of the things I always planned to do when I retired. James L. Swarts '68: I retired from the Internal Revenue Service on January 1, 1999 after 33 years government service. The past four years were as the Upstate New York District TQO (TQM for those not in partnership) coordinator. I am in my second year of divinity school (Bexley Hall Seminary) and hope to finish my Mdiv in May 2000. Peter Thies '96: Well, I've had an exciting summer. I'm engaged! At the risk of being a cliché, she is a Brother. Namely a Gamma Chapter alum named Jennifer, now a veterinary student at Cornell. Speaking of Cornell, that's where I am. I've switched gears a bit in my career goal. I am now studying to be a high school teacher in Physics and Math. It's promising to be very rewarding and I am finding classroom observations and reading papers a refreshing change from quantum field theory formulas. I'm still in the service thing, especially through my fiancée's and my church (where we'll be married in May 2000). Volunteering with the youth group, contacting congregation shut-ins and working at the soup kitchen is a rewarding mix. By the way, if you missed the 50th, don't miss the 55th. I had a blast, including (but not limited to) meeting my big-big-big-big-big-big-big-big-big-big-big-big-big-big-big-big-brother. Sheldon Weinbaum '59: Have lost track of all my brothers between 1955-59. Would like to know if you have heard from any brothers classes 1957-59. Sandra A. Wells '92: I bought a house. I have been working at Torrington Research Company, a rapidly growing fan design company, for the last couple of years. I got to meeting President Clinton and Vice-president Gore in July [1998] because of my duties as network manager/project engineer. Christine Wickham '88: I've been at Bayer for three years now and finally got tired of the 42 mile commute. I bought a condo only 2.5 miles from work and across the street from the beach! New address: 89 Sandpiper Crescent, Milford CT 06460 Valerie and Mark Wrobel '81, '85: Mark now has his Ph.D.-finished '96, works in health physics but heavy into administration now that he's a Major (USAF). Val has switched back to Geriatrics as a part-time Nurse Practitioner in a county clinic. Shannon is nine in the third grade. Sean is seven in the first grade. Dues and Information Form Anyone who hasn't paid dues for 1999 is welcome to do so. They are $15 and entitle you to a copy of the Alumni Directory. Donations over and above dues are always welcome. Even if you aren't paying dues an information form is always welcome. The Glump is intended as a two-way communication device. We try to keep you informed about what's happening with the fraternity and your fellow alumni and we'd like to know what's happening with you. Don't forget to let us know how you've been able to carry on the ideals of Alpha Phi Omega. If you have access to e-mail my address is springer@pcom.net. (Dues, however, must be submitted the old-fashioned way.) A word about e-mail: When we tried to send the last Glump out by e-mail many of the addresses came back as invalid. So if you haven't updated the address we have for you since last October please do so. A word about handwriting: Some of us, including me, have handwriting that can be hard to read. There are a couple of names (including a wife's name) in the News and Notes section that I just hope are right. I also had trouble with an e-mail address or two. Those aren't things I want to be messing up. So give the old guy with the bifocals a break. If your 5's and S's tend to look alike or your handwriting has other problems, please type your input. The next Glump will go out in November. The submission deadline is October 15. Feel free, however, to send in an information form anytime. I'll put it in the next Glump-it just might be a while. Unless told otherwise, I assume it is okay to give out your address and phone number to other alumni and publish them in the Directory. I will normally not give out your e-mail address. I will publish it, however, if you ask in your news form for other alumni to e-mail you. I've added boxes in front of certain lines. Please check the appropriate ones if something has changed. We are now maintaining our own mailing list, so if you move please send us, not just RPI, your new address. That is the only way we will be able to continue sending you the Glump (or anything else). Epsilon Zeta Alumni Association 1998 Dues and News Form (June 1999 Newsletter Form) Please check the box in front of new entries.
