THE GLUMP October 4, 1998 Epsilon Zeta Volume 19, Number 1 Alumni Association Alpha Phi Omega September 1998 ________________________________________________________________________ Editor's corner Welcome to the latest edition of the EZAA's GLUMP newsletter. As my first act as the new editor I would like to extend our thanks to my predecessor Andy ("Send lawyers, guns, and money!") Moroney for his four years of hard work. His efforts were a big part of our success during his tenure. I would also like to thank him for the minutes of the brotherhood meeting at the 50th. Becoming secretary-treasurer was a complete surprise so I obviously wasn't keeping notes during the reunion. Speaking of the Reunion, I'd like to make a personal observation or two. I hadn't been back to campus for about twenty five years (or a quarter century if I really want it to sound like a long time). I certainly expected changes, but it was amazing how much RPI and the chapter had changed in those years. Many of the changes were good, some weren't (a couple of the new buildings don't exactly enhance the look of the campus), but they were all interesting. The trip would have been worth it just to see how different things are now. My most enjoyable surprise was to see how the family trees have grown. When Lee LeClair did the first ones in the late 60's mine was about five levels deep and fit on half a sheet of paper. Neither of us thought anyone would continue them. At the Reunion we found a binder bulging with trees. They had become a chronicle of Big brother-Little brother through the ages. If you were at the Reunion, you know how enjoyable it was. If you haven't been to one, I encourage you to work the next one into your plans. I know I'm glad I did. It's a fun weekend, you'll see friends you haven't seen in years, and you'll find out what's new at RPI and the chapter. Just watch out for your friends. You never know what they might nominate you for. A brief note on the February non-GLUMP. We did not have an ECOM meeting scheduled for the spring . When Rob Rommel and I discussed doing the GLUMP we decided that the material we had didn't justify the expense of sending one out. That was probably true, but with 20-20 hindsight it was a mistake. Without the GLUMP to solicit news and notes for this GLUMP we didn't get any. What you see is what we already had. I also probably left many of you wondering what was happening. As Andy pointed out recently, the newsletter is the vehicle for interest in the Association. In any event, that was a one-time decision that won't be repeated. The GLUMP will be published again in February as usual. Yup, it's GLUMP time again. Sometimes I wonder why I write these reports, since my continued presence as President show either (1) no one reads my report, they cut straight to the good stuff (money, old contacts, and all that), or (2) nobody cares what I say, since I have been sentenced for life... Anyway, the story is: The EZAA will have its day in court soon (there is a side story about some lawyer losing a certain file, and us having to employ alternative means to obtain the information we required, but it's classified...). The date will be set at the October 18 business meeting. C'mon down. We registered with the national office late this year, but we are registered now and for next year too. Many thanks to Paul Sicard for his work on the 50th gift, which will be an information kiosk designed this semester by the school of Architecture. Repairs will also be made to the 40th gift (the map of the campus outside the Campus Security Office). I'm trying to get information on the APO Scholarship fund (and recipients) from Virginia Crotty of the Financial Aid office. Hope to see some of you on October 17-18. Take care until then. Rob P.S. Got some information from Virginia Crotty of the Office of Financial Aid. The APO Scholarship Fund has almost $2800 of carryover and $1500 of earnings in it for a total of approximately $4300. The last scholarship was awarded for the 95/96 academic year to two students in the Class of 1999 for $2550 each. Prior to that, five awards of $1300 were given to students in the Class of 1995 during the 91/92 academic year. News from our Vice-President The past year since I've seen you has been a very exciting one for me. I have gotten engaged, married and elected Section 88 chair. I have also moved to western Massachusetts and have HUGE telephone bills because all my friends are far away. I have arranged for everyone to have dinner Saturday night at Holmes and Watson. Apparently, many of you frequented the place when you should have been studying at RPI. (smile) [Ed: Check at the APO office in the Union for time, directions, etc.] The meeting on Sunday to be at 11am in Sage 4101. Unfortunately, the active chapter has quite a few members going to the Rochester 89 sectionals, so there may not be that many actives around. I would like to thank all of you for letting me be your EZAA Vice President for the past year. I am sorry to say that I will not be running again this year. I would like to tell you that my time commitments prevent me from doing so, but everyone knows the VP is a cake walk job. (smile) Actually, I discovered that I really loved working on the alumni reunion. I'm good at that sort of thing and I would rather do that than anything else. I cursed at some of you (Braverman) at the 50th for asking me to run future reunions, but now that I have had some time to recover, you can count on me to help again. Do you realize that both Ken and I got engaged and married right around the 50th? Maybe that can be an advertisement for bachelors looking to get hitched: run an alumni reunion, get married in no time. (smile) I hope all are well and taking care of yourselves until we meet again... Cindy Smith Corbett PS I really miss the guys from the Class of 1971. Craig, I'll be in Minneapolis December 27-31. See you at the bar at the Hyatt. News and Notes Gary Cattarin '85: Writes that Emily Ann Cattarin was born November 7, 1997 at 12:23 p.m.. She weighed 6 lbs 15 ozs and in Gary's words is "Damn Cute!" Steve Feldman: I am currently working at PC Quote, Chicago, a provider of stock market data, including via the 'net for almost six years. I'm married with six kids (Oldest just had Bar-Mitzvah (i.e., 13 years old), youngest 14 months), and very busy. I look forward to hearing from my friends of years past. (Originally entered RPI in fall '79, took a six year leave and graduated in spring '89, CS.) Non-work-related mail should go to my personal address: shoolem@mes.net Douglas Fink '87: I'm the computer programmer for Penny Press (owner of Dell Magazines). Our magazine sales are about half of the entire puzzle magazine market. I also am a drummer, help run the SoNoArts Celebration (400 volunteer effort) and have a girlfriend named Susan (gee, you scribble news down and it comes out in random order). Oh, if anyone needs a puzzle (word search, crossword, etc.) for a special cause give me a buzz. Ian Freirich '80: [Ed: I received this under the heading "Blackmail information" so in the spirit of brotherhood I'm publishing this so no nefarious character can use it against Ian] Ian now finds his hometown of New York City too big and overwhelming, so his son Gordon, seven and with a green belt in karate, flew alone to visit his grandparents in New York while Ian and Leslie vacationed around Victoria BC and Puget Sound. They are living in San Luis Obispo, California. Ian is still miserable working as a prison psychiatrist. And the funny thing is that it's not the prisoners that are the main problem; it's the administration. They've added a 1 1/2 year old 1/2 beagle - 1/2 basset hound to the household (along with Scrumpy the Happy Cat), and write San Luis Obispo is a lovely place. Janet Sykes Germiller '89: I am a busy homemaker of Stephen, 5 and the triplets Clara, Eric and Christopher, 4. John and I will be celebrating our ten year anniversary in the spring. He graduated this year with his MD, Ph.D. and is beginning his six year residency in Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Michigan. Les Hoffman '48: I read my write-up in the August 97 GLUMP. It was "almost true." I must add the continuing updating and changing of our 200 year old New England farm house. 45 years of major rebuilding, remodeling and additions have kept it old New England farmhouse. I'm also semi-active in my company as director of R.D. I still redesign old instruments to make them better as well as dream up new delta-P instruments to meet new applications. Lastly I'm redesigning my outside ride in train locomotive to hydraulic drive with hydraulic controls. This locomotive is 2" to the foot scale or 1/6 scale. This train is done for my grandchildren and is the high point of the birthday parties each year. Naturally there is no rocking chair on our side porch. Sidney Hollander '70: In September 1997 I completed my 18thyear with the Aerospace Corporation in Sunnyvale, California. I have been working almost exclusively in the system engineering of satellite ground systems for the Air Force, specializing now in object-oriented software development. In February 1998 Betty and I will celebrate our 25th anniversary. If there is one thing I learned in my years with Alpha Phi Omega it is the importance of service to the community. Nine years ago I started volunteering at the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refugee in Freemont, CA. Six years ago I was asked to serve on the board of directors of the San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society. Last summer I was elected to my second three-year term as President. While this "job" requires over 200 hours per year, I find the experience of interacting with other volunteers and the dedicated USFWS staff invaluable. Audrey Holm-Hansen '78: Alas, I was recently re-elected President of my Condominium Association. Money can't buy the kind of education I've received for free in running a condo association. Donna Husmann '76: Medical school continues apace. Stressful as always, but WONDERFUL to be here. Clinical rotations start in January - real patients, real people, real procedures. I was out of touch for so long - it's great to be back in contact - so do! Enrique "Kiki" Lopez '91: I am currently training to be a C-130 loadmaster for the Air National Guard in Schenectady, NY. Sometime in the next couple of years I should be flying to Antarctica (wind chill -100 degrees F) in support of the National Science Foundation. No, I cannot bring back any penguins. Dalia Marshall '88: Planning a trip to Egypt with my husband Ralph to show him my country as well as to see various family members that I have not seen in over 16 years. I also just got promoted at work (The Bank of New York) to Assistant Treasurer. Deborah Miller '88: I just started a new job at the end of July 97. I'm a Software Developer for Moore Products. So far, so good. John Moore, Scout Advisor '77-'79: Is now the Director of Camping for the Jersey Shore Council, Boy Scouts of America, Tom's River, New Jersey. David Nagy '85: Is still in the Troy area, working for Keane, Inc. at the GE plant in Schenectady, NY, married with two daughters: Helen (5) and Jessica (3). He's an advisor to the chapter. Heather Shenkman, '97: I'm living in Albany and am in my third year of medical school at Albany Medical College. Catherine E. Taylor '95: Hello! I'm currently stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany (1Lt, US Army). I've been in Germany for two years now including seven months in Bosnia. I should be here until March 2000, so if any of you are in the area or planning to be, feel free to call or stop by! Sue Tedeschi '92 and Jamie Tedeschi '91: Jamie and I are entering our second year of homeownership. As many would suspect, life is rarely dull in the Tedeschi household. Besides being a computer guru Jamie has also gotten into motorcycling and woodworking. I'm still busy in the auto industry and occasionally take time out to wage war with the garden weeds.
