Walkathon Nets $1,500 For RetardedTROY - The Rensselaer County Chapter of the New York State Association for Retarded Children is at least $1,500 richer after a weekend walkathon sponsored by the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

According to Douglas Michasl, spokesman for the Service fraternity, 55 walkers left Troy High School parking lot on a 25-mile trek to the Pinewoods Center for the Retarded.

Most walkers were teen-agers and college students, but there were some adults, including Mrs. Edward Pattison, president of the Rensselaer County Chapter. She completed 12 miles and had pledges of $15 per mile.

The $1,500 collected could be doubled to $3,000 through New York State funds which match whatever gifts the Rensselaer County Chapter receives, Michael stated.

Among non-monetary donations to the effort were pastries from the Freihofer Baking Company; beverages from the Seven-Up Bottling Company; patrol cars provided by the Cohoes Rescue Squad and the Red Cross; and assistance from the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Department, and North Greenbush and Rensselaer Police Departments.
